School Update - October 27

Dear Centennial High School Community,

Yesterday was an exceptionally busy day at Centennial High School.  During the day we welcomed hundreds of student leaders and teaching staff from several Calgary junior high and high schools, as Centennial hosted the Horizon Leadership Conference.  It was a fantastic day in our gym, with inspiring speakers and engaging activities.  Thank you to the many schools who joined us, and a huge congratulations and thank you to Mr. Brent Dickson and the students of our Leadership program, for organizing, facilitating, and hosting this event.  Well done!

In the evening, our gymnasium was once again full for our Out of Province Post-Secondary Fair, as dozens of institutions from across Canada were present to answer questions from hundreds of students, parents, and guardians.  The evening was a tremendous success.  Many thanks to all the post-secondary institutions that were in attendance, and especially to our fantastic Student Services (Guidance) team of Ms. Hunter, Mx. Mead, Ms. Minhas and Ms. Harrison for all the organization and coordination!

To make these events (and ALL events at Centennial) possible, our Facility Operators, custodial and cleaning staff worked tirelessly behind the scenes to set up and take down everything required to make these wonderful opportunities for students happen.  On behalf of the entire Centennial community, I want to thank Ernest Zeng and our exceptional Facilities team for their exceptional work – this week and every week.  Without their dedication to this school, none of what we do would be possible.

Please read on for some important updates.

Music Program Hard at Work!

  • Our Music Program is bustling, with our Remembrance Day Ceremony upcoming November 8, Winter Concerts and an international trip on the horizon, and the Vic Lewis Band Festival right around the corner.
  • Thank you to the performing artists in our Band and Choir programs, for adding such life and beauty to Centennial High School, and good luck at Vic Lewis!

Graduation 2024!

  • This information is for students, parents and guardians of the Class of 2024.
  • Our Graduation ceremony (morning) and banquet (evening) take place May 17, 2024 at the Grey Eagle Events Centre.
  • Please keep an eye out for extensive Graduation information that will be shared via School Messenger in the weeks and months to come (Grad information will also be posted to our school website).
  • Please remember to check your student’s fees in your MyCBE account.
  • A Graduation fee of $60.00 should be in your account; this fee covers the costs associated with the Ceremony portion of that day (facility rental, Grad cap purchase, Grad gown rental, Closing Ceremony certificate, photos of your Grad crossing the stage, etc.).

Elf the Musical Coming Soon!

  • Please join us in the Centennial Theatre December 12, 13 & 14 @ 7pm for our much-anticipated musical – the holiday classic Elf!
  • Students and staff have been preparing with zeal for what is sure to be a wonderful show with humour and heart.

Fall Athletics Coming to a Close

  • As our Fall Athletics season begins to wind up, and the Winter season approaches, we want to congratulate our student athletes, coaches, and teacher sponsors on their dedication and commitment as ‘Yotes.
  • Year Two of our Golf team was successful, as we continue to grow this new sport at Centennial.
  • Congratulations to our Cross Country athletes and coaches for an excellent season.  Our team numbers continue to grow and we had great performances this year – many of these athletes have decided to extend their passion for running, forming a new CHS Running Club!
  • Our Girls Soccer team also had an excellent season.  They were a highly competitive group of exceptional athletes who represented our school well.  Congrats Coyotes!
  • Congrats also to our Senior Football team, who competed with great heart and competitive spirit against the top teams in the city in Division 1 this season.  They have one more game at Shouldice Athletic Park this Monday, October 30 @ 7pm, as they take on William Aberhart High School in the “Halloween Bowl”!
  • Our volleyball teams have had successful seasons, with the regular season wrapping up next week and playoffs to follow – there is still lots of season left for our volleyball teams.  Good luck and Go ‘Yotes!
  • Our Junior Football team has completed an undefeated regular season, and has earned a spot in the Division 2 City Championship game at Shouldice Athletic Park – Tuesday, November 7 @ 5pm!  Please come out and support the team as they look to add a banner to an undefeated season!
  • A reminder that the CSHSAA does charge an admission fee to all playoff games ($2 for students of a competing team’s school, $5 for all other spectators, cash preferred).
  • Our sincere appreciation to the parent/guardian volunteers, community volunteers, and staff volunteers for dedicating so much of your time and energy to support our student athletes.  Your commitment to our school community does not go unnoticed.

Casino Night

  • Though a long way off, we hope to have a Casino Night for Centennial High School in the spring.
  • Casinos provide tens of thousands of dollars to our school, which pays for vital resources and equipment to support student learning.
  • Thank you to CHAMP (Centennial High School Association of Music Parents) for organizing our casino events, with support from Music teacher extraordinaire Ms. Laurendeau.
  • Please consider volunteering for a time slot in the spring – we need parents/guardians of our student athletes (CHS Athletics receives 1/3 of the proceeds), as well as volunteers who are parents/guardians of our whole school community (who also receive 1/3).  Historically, our Music families contribute much more volunteer time to our casinos than the 1/3 they receive.
  • Thank you in advance Coyote community!

I hope you have a fantastic weekend and thank you for reading.

Sincerely,

Joe Sturgeon, Principal
