We take safety and security seriously. It is important that we maintain a safe and caring community so that learning can take place.

Visitors & Volunteers

Centennial High School is a closed campus. This means that all visitors to the school, including parents, must go to the Main Office immediately upon arrival. Anyone waiting to meet a Centennial student will be asked to wait quietly in the Main Office or off the school property. Unauthorized people on school property may be charged with trespassing. The Education Act provides for significant substantial fines for individuals trespassing on school property.

Student Identification Cards (ID)

All students will be provided an ID card which must be carried at all times while in the school and on school property. ID cards must be visible at all times. They are required for the library, examinations and may be required at other school functions. Students must show their ID card to any staff member or school resource officer upon request, and must comply with this request in the interest of safety and security.

Note: Student ID may also be required by Calgary Transit to access their services.

Lost or Stolen ID Card

If an ID card is lost or stolen, students are responsible to pick-up a replacement at the office for a cost of $5.00.

Accidents

The details of any accident are to be reported immediately, either to a teacher or to the Main Office for appropriate documentation and/or communication.

Student Searches

In the event that school safety and security is a concern administration has the right to complete searches of student lockers, student property or personal belongings at any time.

School Resource Officer

The role of the Resource Officer is to provide guidance and act as a legal resource for teachers, students, parents/guardians and the community at large. Part of this role is to encourage communication and greater understanding among young people and the Calgary Police Service.

Signing Out

We recommend that medical/dental appointments be made outside the regular school day. If students know they will need to leave early, their parents/guardians must either call the absence line 403-256-8140, ext.1, send the student with a note, or pick-up the student and personally sign the student out. More information on our Attendance page.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.

Video Surveillance Technology

The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.

Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) section 33(b). The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.

This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.

Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.

For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
