Centennial High School Updates – May 8, 2026

Dear Centennial High School Community,

Well, one week from now our Class of 2026 will have crossed the stage at the Grey Eagle Event Centre.  What a joyous occasion it is sure to be.  Grad is one of the many things that make May an extremely busy (and rewarding) month at Centennial.  Please read on for several updates.

Provincial Skills Success!

  • This week two students (Leila B and Fatima G) competed in the Provincial Skills Competition in Edmonton, representing Centennial High School
  • Both girls performed exceptionally well, with Fatima achieving a 3rd place finish in the Braiding Competition
  • Congratulations to Leila, Fatima, Ms. Parmiter, and our entire Cosmetology program!

Graduation Rehearsal

  • Yesterday was our Grad Rehearsal for all Grade 12 students participating in the events next Friday
  • Any graduating students who missed the assembly should go to the staffroom (beside the Lower Cafeteria) on Monday or Tuesday at lunch to pick up their gown, v-stole, cap and tassel
  • Families: please note that students are returning their gowns and v-stoles immediately after the Graduation Ceremony, so please take any pictures with them in their full Grad regalia between now and BEFORE the ceremony (as they will not have their gowns after it)
  • I can't believe the big day is only a week away!

Livestreaming of Graduation Ceremony

  • For loved ones unable to attend our Grad Ceremony in person next Friday, we will be livestreaming the event
  • Please use this link to watch the ceremony, which will begin at 9:00am on May 15: Centennial High School Graduation Ceremony 2026
  • If you experience issues with this link, please try the link from the School Messenger sent to Grade 12 families on Monday, May 4 – it is the same link, but sometimes links being sent through School Messenger can be finicky

Non-Instruction Day (Grad) - May 15

  • Friday, May 15 is not only our Graduation Day, but it is a Non-Instruction Day for all CBE schools
  • There are no classes for students on May 15
  • Classes resume on Tuesday May 19

Holocaust Symposium

  • On Wednesday hundreds of Centennial students and staff attended the Holocaust Symposium at the Central Library downtown
  • Teachers who attended shared with me how proud they are of our students and their tremendous maturity, respect, and mindfulness during this event
  • Students and staff heard from a survivor of the Holocaust, who was saved as a young child by her heroic (and ever-hopeful) mom – the story would melt your heart, while proving the power of love and hope
  • Thank you Mr. Chmilar and all staff involved, for ensuring Centennial students continue to participate in this vitally important event

Alberta Student Leadership Conference

  • Last weekend Centennial students represented our community at ASLC (the Alberta Student Leadership Conference)
  • As has become the norm, Centennial students and teachers led the way during a terrific weekend of fun, growth, and visionary leadership

Rock-A-Thon

  • As I type, dozens of Coyotes are rocking away (on rocking chairs) in our Lower Cafeteria
  • This is Rock-A-Thon, and annual fundraising tradition at Centennial High School
  • It is nearly 2:00pm as I type this in my office, and I just heard a huge cheer from the other end of the school – it sounds like they’re having a good time!
  • Already these wonderful students have raised well over $10,000 for the Rotary Flames House – an incredibly worthy cause
  • Kudos to our Leadership students and staff, and thank you to all of our generous donors

Yearbook Distribution

  • Yearbook Distribution will be during Block 1, Period 2 (9:09-10:33) on the last day of classes for regular program students (Tuesday, June 9)
  • There will be a limited number of yearbooks for sale at the business office on the day of distribution (June 9)
  • These yearbooks will cost $50 and will be first-come-first serve (there is no waitlist)

Spring Music Concert!

  • Last night hundreds of us bore witness to one of the most incredible nights of music I have ever witnessed at Centennial
  • Best wishes to our graduating music students - as you saw last night with so many alumni in the audience, you are always welcome here at Centennial; we hope to see you here in the future, cheering on the next wave of gifted Coyotes!
  • Kudos to all of our exceptionally talented students – both in our Bands and in Choir – your talent and grace enrich our world

Celebration of the Arts Month at Centennial!

  • May is a big month for the arts at Centennial – with our outstanding Spring Music Concert last night and the performances of our Symphonic Band and Choir at the Graduation Ceremony next Friday; with much more to come!
  • Student visual artwork is on display in our school all month, bringing our halls to life!
  • We will enjoy a matinee Spring Mainstage performance on Wednesday, May 27 in the Theatre!
  • Thursday, May 28 marks an evening of Yotes Drama Society Director 30 One-Act Plays, PLUS a Mainstage Evening Performance
    • Doors open at 4:45pm
    • Show starts at 5:00pm
    • The doors will open between each Director’s piece (every 8 to 12 minutes) – it’s an evening festival experience!
  • Thank you for supporting the arts at Centennial High School!

Class of 2026 Pancake Breakfast

  • It is tradition at Centennial that staff cook and serve breakfast to our graduating students as they arrive on their last day of classes
  • This year, the pancake and sausage breakfast will take place at 8:00am on Tuesday, June 9
  • Thank you to CHiPS (the Centennial High School Parent Society) for funding this opportunity to honour our departing students
  • Thank you also to Fluor Canada, for donating a brand new grill to Centennial on which to cook pancakes!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Joe Sturgeon

Principal, Centennial High School
