Dear Centennial High School Community,

Time moves quickly.  As I type this, students are already four days into the new school year.  Athletics are underway, school clubs will be starting up soon, and classes are already in full swing.

For families new to Centennial, and as a reminder for those returning, please note that a significant amount of information will be shared regularly via School Messenger.  Our School Messengers also get posted to the school website (https://centennial.cbe.ab.ca/).  I encourage you to read these messages.  Our Messengers are not sent at a prescribed time every week.  My experience as both a teacher and parent is that Messengers are more likely to be noticed and read when they arrive in Inboxes at various times – at least that is what the psychology teacher in me believes.  So, you will not see a 5pm Friday weekly message or something to that effect.  Many Messengers will be sent on Thursday evenings, but not all of them.  Also, please do not be alarmed if a week passes with no Messenger.  We are mindful of information overload and spam emails, so we try to send Messengers only when there is important and useful information to pass on.

To that end, please read below for several information items and updates.

Meet the Teacher Night

  • Please join us for Meet the Teacher Night, which is Thursday, September 10 at 7pm
  • The evening begins with a short assembly in our Gymnasium at 7pm
  • After the assembly, you will have the opportunity to follow your child’s schedule for short 10 minute classes with each of their teachers
  • This is a fantastic opportunity to put faces to names and get to know a little about the fantastic people who will be working with your kids this semester

Wellness D2L “Course”

  • Beginning tomorrow (Friday, September 4), all Centennial students will be enrolled in a new “course” called Wellness
  • Please note: this is not an actual class requiring attendance or involving assignments or marks, etc.
  • Rather, the Wellness course is an incredible selection of resources for all students that are available via a D2L shell
    • All students are encouraged to peruse this D2L shell, as it contains extensive information on everything from scholarships and post-secondary information to study strategies and mental health resources – and so much more!
  • Thank you to our outstanding Guidance/Student Services team for providing these additional resources for all Centennial students

Cell Phone Policy – It’s the Law!

  • We are seeing that students joining us for Grade 10 are more and more accustomed to the requirement that they put their mobile devices away during class time
  • Grades 11 and 12 students have more difficulty with this adjustment, overall
  • Regardless, it is provincial law that students must put away and not access their personal mobile devices during instructional time
  • Please remind your children of this requirement, and that cell phone policy will be strictly enforced at Centennial as required by law

Club Showcase!

  • Centennial offers an incredible array of extracurricular opportunities for students
  • We encourage your children to get involved at Centennial, and to try out new things
  • Students should swing by our Club Showcase, Wednesday September 16 at lunch in the gymnasium, to see some of the fantastic clubs we have available

Spring Break Europe Trip

  • Centennial is thrilled to once again be able to provide an opportunity for students to travel to Europe during Spring Break
  • During Spring Break 2027, dozens of Centennial students will visit Paris, Vimy Ridge, and London/Vimy
  • There are a handful of spots still available
  • Students can see Mr. Chmilar in Room P123 if they have questions, or you can email Mr. Chmilar at bmchmilar@cbe.ab.ca

Parking Passes

  • Thank you to those who have registered their students’ vehicles and requested parking passes online
  • Parking fees will be added to these student accounts by the end of this week
  • We are experiencing a slight delay in receiving the physical parking passes from our vendor
  • Please be assured that parking tickets will not be issued until such time as students are able to display their passes
  • When physical passes are ready for distribution, students will be notified to pick them up in the Business Office
  • Parking passes must be displayed on the rearview mirror at all times while parked in the Student Parking Lot
