Dear Centennial High School Community,

We hope your week is going well.  The school year at Centennial is off to a great start.  Students are settling into the routine of high school nicely, and we are thus far experiencing (knock on wood!!) fewer behavioural issues and other challenges than we have seen in recent years – despite a surging student population.  Thank you students.  This school community has always been and will always be what you make it, and thus far you are establishing a vibrant, safe, and welcoming school culture.

We have a number of updates to share today.

Congratulations Ms. Erica Good!

Our Learning Leader of English as an Additional Language, International Students & Second Languages, Erica Good, has been offered and has accepted the position of Assistant Principal at Nelson Mandela High School.  Erica’s last day here at Centennial is this Friday, September 20.  On behalf of our entire school community, we want to congratulate Ms. Good and to thank her for years of dedicated service to our students and staff.  Erica has always worked to ensure support and comfort is provided to students and their families – including many who have moved into our community after very difficult experiences while also being new to our culture and language.  Thank you Ms. Good – we will miss you.

Club Rush Tomorrow & Thursday!

  • Centennial High School is offering over two dozen (!) clubs for students this year
  • Please encourage your child to come to the gym tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday at lunch for Club Rush
  • During Club Rush, students can visit booths and displays set up by students and staff, to learn about extracurricular activities that they may be interested in
  • THANK YOU Coyote staff for going above and beyond – your volunteerism provides countless, diverse opportunities for our students

Chief Superintendent Student Advisory Council (CSSAC)

  • Each year Centennial High School and 20+ other CBE high schools select one Grade 11 and one Grade 12 student representative to participate in CSSAC
  • CSSAC representatives will meet directly with Chief Superintendent Jo Pitman, as well as other student leaders from across our system, several times during the school year
  • The aim of CSSAC is to improve the high school experience for students – in the past two years our representatives have brought fantastic ideas and initiatives back to Centennial that have made our school a better place
  • Congratulations to our Grade 12 representative Kyla L. and our Grade 11 representative Greyson J., and thank you Ms. Jasmine Kalala for serving as our teacher sponsor for CSSAC!

Guest Speaker – September 26 School Council Meeting

  • Please join us in the Centennial Theatre on Thursday, September 26 (7:00 – 8:30pm) for our first School Council meeting of the year
  • Guest speaker Shelly Qualtieri will be here to present a poignant discussion on anxiety, depression, ADHD, eating disorders and suicide
  • Please see the attached document (click on the link below) for more information on Shelly and the presentation – we hope to see you on the 26!

Parking Lot Traffic Flow Woes

  • Another year, another reminder that traffic flow is an ongoing concern at Centennial
  • Please consider arranging to pick up your child in an area adjacent to the school, as opposed to on the south roadway between the school and the student parking lot
  • When choosing to pick up your child on school property, best practice is to enter the property off of Sun Valley Blvd NE of the school building, then proceed along the road immediately south of the school, exiting the property at the SW corner of the building
  • Also, please note that the small ‘roundabout’ at the NE corner of the school is reserved for buses who drop off and pick up students in our Inclusive Education programs – please avoid this area when dropping off/picking up your student
  • Please also be aware of pedestrians on and near school property – their minds may be elsewhere
  • Thank you for your patience as we work together to try to reduce the traffic jams and related frustration that comes with an abundance of vehicles arriving at the same time, with limited space to go around

Parking Passes

  • A reminder that all students parking in the student parking lot require a parking pass
  • Parking pass enforcement will begin at the start of October
  • Passes can be applied and paid for in the Business Office

Thank you and have a fantastic evening.
