Centennial High School Updates - May 9, 2025

 Dear Centennial High School Community,

As I am sure you know, tonight is a big night.  Yes, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is playing the Jubilee Auditorium!  Sadly, my colleagues and our students lack my shameless dedication to the world's greatest band, so I am reduced to spreading pro-Dirt Band propaganda to the greater school community.  Thanks for indulging me.

In the meantime, it has been a big week at Centennial High School, with a huge week ahead of us.  Please read below for some updates and celebrations.

 Spring Music Concert

  • Our incredible musicians and vocalists performed their hearts out last night at the final music concert of the year
  • Thank you to Ms. Laurendeau, Ms. Hood, CHAMP, and the exceptionally talented students for making this event such a success
  • Our music program is vitally important at Centennial High School - they create a culture of beauty and inclusivity that raises the bar for our entire community
  • Thank you and best wishes to our graduating music students - as you saw last night with so many Coyote alumni in the audience, you are always welcome here at Centennial; we hope to see you here in the future, cheering on the next wave of gifted Coyotes!

Graduation Rehearsal

  • Yesterday was our Grad Rehearsal for all Grade 12 students participating in the events next Friday
  • Any graduating students who missed the assembly should go to the Lower Cafeteria near the staffroom Monday at lunch to pick up their gown, v-stole, cap and tassel
  • Families: please note that students are returning their gowns and v-stoles immediately after the Graduation Ceremony, so please take any pictures with them in their full Grad regalia between now and BEFORE the ceremony (as they will not have their gowns after it)
  • I can't believe the big day is only a week away!

Non-Instruction Day (Grad) - May 16

  • Friday, May 16 is not only our Graduation Day, but it is a Non-Instruction Day for all CBE schools
  • There are no classes for students on May 16; classes resume on Tuesday May 20

Alberta Student Leadership Conference

  • This weekend several of our outstanding student leaders are attending ASLC (the Alberta Student Leadership Conference) in Strathmore
  • Thank you in advance for representing your school community with energy and integrity
  • Our Leadership program is considered to be amongst the best in the entire nation - thank you Mr. Dickson and Ms. Kalala for setting the standard for emerging leaders at Centennial (and nation-wide!)

 Skills Alberta

·                     The following students returned last night from representing Centennial High School at the Alberta Skills Competition:

o        Wesley D (Cabinet Making - Silver Medallist!)

o        Aly H (Hairstyling)

o        Minori S (Fashion Technology)

·                     Congratulations on your outstanding work and thank you for representing our school so impressively in Edmonton!

·                     Thank you to Ms. Kilby, Mr. Friedley, and Ms. Parmiter for all your time and dedication supporting these exceptional students

·                     Of special note, Centennial alumnus Samantha Bridle won Silver in the post-secondary competition in Culinary Arts!

o        Congrats Sam, as well as her Centennial staff mentors Chef Ali, Chef Alex, and Chef Jim!

 Spirit Week

  • This week was Spirit Week at Centennial, with everything from Pajama Day to Stampede Day to Dress Like a Celebrity Day
  • Wednesday was marked by Hats On For Mental Health, while on Monday we observed Red Dress Day (a national day of remembrance and awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people)
  • Thank you to the outstanding staff and student leaders for all of your efforts to continue to build culture and community at Centennial - you make our world a better place

Thank you for reading.  I hope you have a fantastic weekend.
Sincerely,

Joe Sturgeon
