Dear Centennial High School Community,

Things continue to move very quickly at Centennial High School.  Today at lunch prospective Valedictorians met to discuss the application process.  We have such an incredible student body, exemplified by the outstanding senior students nominated for this singular honour.  Meanwhile, lunch time activities from intramural flag football to Kindness Week (last week), Women’s Week (this week), and Culture Week (next week) continue to provide opportunities for students school-wide to engage and connect with our school.  Thank you to all the students and staff who work so tirelessly to provide these opportunities for the Centennial community.

Please read on for several important updates:

International Women’s Day – March 8

A few years ago, former Centennial Assistant Principal Lisa Hannay spoke with me about International Women’s Day.  I am embarrassed to share that I knew little about this day, despite the fact that my grandmas, my mom, and my mother-in-law were and are the guiding lights of my life.  To Ms. Hannay, and to all of the incredible moms, grandmas, daughters, sisters, and nieces out there – Happy International Women’s Day, this Saturday.  And thank you Ms. Soni and our new Women’s Empowerment Club, for your ongoing work to raise awareness about influential women, women’s rights, and societal issues that continue and must be addressed, even in 2025.

Congratulations Honour Roll Students!

  • Thanks to the dedication and advocacy of Mr. Freeborn and Ms. Kim, Centennial High School is celebrating an Honour Roll for the first time in over a decade
  • Congratulations to all Centennial students who have achieved Honour Roll (and Honour Roll With Distinction) status – we are proud of your academic achievement, dedication and work ethic!

Surveys!  Surveys!  Surveys!

  • We will have an extended Period 2 class tomorrow (Friday, March 7) so that students in all grades can complete an important survey (students with a Period 2 spare can go to the Lower Cafeteria to complete the survey)
  • Additionally, parents/guardians of Grade 10 students in the Calgary Board of Education have already received a link from the CBE to complete the Alberta Education Assurance Survey – I hope many of you were able to share your perspectives
  • At Centennial, we value the feedback from each and every student and community member
  • As a direct result of student voice and advocacy over the past four years, we have introduced the following:
    • An Elevate Diversity Club, to recognize and celebrate diversity while providing voice and opportunities to connect for all students
    • A Green Earth Club, to beautify our school community, promote green initiatives, engage in charitable endeavours, and make the world a better place
    • The Principal’s Advisory Council, to provide students with a direct voice and connection with me, so that they can identify areas of concerns and strategies to improve our school
    • The annual “Spill the Tea”/Coffee with Joe event, where students can sit down with me one to one throughout the day to discuss whatever is on their minds
    • An Honour Roll, to celebrate students who excel academically and find pride in an area of success that should never be overlooked or underappreciated
    • Urinal dividers in Boy’s washrooms, to enhance privacy
    • Feminine Hygiene dispensers in Girl’s washrooms, to enhance wellness
    • The Student Wellness Action Team and the Women’s Empowerment Club, which focus on initiatives to help all Centennial students feel a greater sense of belonging and connectedness
    • Staff professional learning related to trauma-informed practice and well-being
    • Several new clubs, events, and activities, to provide opportunities for as many students as possible to engage with peers and staff and to feel a part of the greater Centennial community
    • …and much, much more
