Dear Centennial High School Community,

As we head into a balmy (?!) spring weekend, we would like to share a couple updates with the community.

CANstruction Event!

  • Today several Centennial students took part in a charity event at SouthCentre Mall called CANstruction
  • This event was facilitated in part through our corporate partnership with Fluor Canada – thank you Fluor!
  • Student competitors created an artistic sculpture out of canned food items (the food items are being donated to the Calgary Food Bank, as well)
  • The sculptures will be on display at SouthCentre from April 6 – 21; please go and have a look at the incredible creativity on display
  • Congratulations and thank you to Mr. Mah and our student participants Roxanne D., Jeffery L., Marshall M., Schiehallion M., and Gulyar U.

Partial Solar Eclipse Precautions (Monday, April 8)

Please read this messaging from the Calgary Board of Education regarding the partial solar eclipse visible in Calgary on Monday, April 8:

  • The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2:00pm, with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43pm
  • There can be serious damage to vision as a result of viewing the eclipse in an unsafe manner
  • Students are encouraged to remain indoors during class time and breaks, as well as away from windows to the outside between the hours of 11:50am and 1:50pm
  • It is unsafe to look at the partial eclipse through unfiltered glasses, cameras, telescopes, binoculars or any other optical device
  • Curious individuals may not fully understand the danger of viewing the eclipse and the potential damage to their vision caused by viewing the harmful rays of the sun
  • Viewing a partial eclipse does not cause immediate pain which would typically cause the viewer look away – instead, permanent eye damage is sustained without any immediate signs, until it is too late
  • The only safe way to view an eclipse is through special filters installed on telescopes, solar binoculars and also in eclipse glasses
  • More safety information can be found on the NASA website or from the Canadian Association of Optometrists

Wishing you and yours a fantastic weekend.

Sincerely,

Joe Sturgeon
